materials make the difference
jumpstart building performance using
all natural walls
hempcrete
A masonry system using lime concrete blocks made with hemp hurd as the cellulose filler. Ultra light weight blocks mean faster build times with no portland cement.
rammed earth
An incredibly beautiful wall solution that involves layers of earthen material laid inside a formwork, creating a high-end stratified wall pattern. Rammed earth is highly energy- efficient and insulative.
compressed earth
A load bearing masonry system using bricks that are compressed instead of fired, meaning they are quicker to produce and have a lower embodied energy. Bricks can even be manufactured on site, using site material.
straw bale
Straw bales are inserted between occasional framed studs to create a super efficient, highly insulating, and cost effective wall system.
light straw clay
A Light Straw Clay system (LSC) is an infill material that is inserted between a timber frame or post and beam structure.
cob
A load bearing wall system using an optimized ratio of clay, sand, and straw that is sculpted wet for added strength and lower embodied energy. Materials can be harvested onsite.
let your natural walls breathe WITH
High Performance Finishes
LIME PLASTER + lime Wash
This exterior finish works together with any of the monolithic wall systems above to control moisture and temperature in your home. This finish will last for hundreds of years as the lime calcifies over time.
interior CLAY PLASTER
Most homes are finished with synthetic paints, which release harmful VOCs the air you breathe. This alternative, non-toxic interior finish lets you and your walls breathe easy, while releasing healthy negative ions.
ARE YOU WONDERING
how THE HECK
do these walls work?
Design with the sun in mind
proper solar DESIGN WILL save you MONEY
A solar designed house accepts heat from the sun in the winter, and sheds heat in the summer, saving you hundreds on your heating and cooling bills. Thoughtful window sizes and placement will bring in natural light and help you save on electricity. High performance doesn’t have to be expensive. These solar design moves are free, they just require knowledge of how to use the sun to the home’s advantage.
